Compare the work before you compare the price.
Two estimates can describe very different projects. One may include new flashing, waste removal, and deck repairs. Another may exclude those items. Start with a clear description of what each price covers.
The roof
Size, pitch, roof shape, and access affect the work. A roof with several valleys needs a different plan from a simple roof.
The materials
The shingle product is one part of the system. Review the underlayment, flashing, edges, and ventilation details.
The site
Material delivery, access, property protection, and waste removal belong in the project plan.
Read an estimate side by side.
Use these questions with each contractor. A clear answer is more useful than a broad promise.

Plan for what the crew cannot see yet.
Existing materials can hide damage below the surface. Ask how the contractor will document the condition and explain the cost before additional work starts.
Keep the original estimate and each approved change together. This gives you one clear record of the project.

What does the base price exclude?
Ask for specific exclusions, including deck repairs or other work that depends on conditions below the old roof.
How will I approve additional work?
Agree on the contact person, the information you will receive, and how you will approve the change.
Which warranty documents will I receive?
Request the actual material and workmanship terms for the proposed project.
